Lesson Summary:

This lesson by Tolerance.org is not designed exclusively for Jewish students, so educators can adapt the lesson to fit their community s needs.

This lesson is the second in a series called “The Rich Tapestry of Religion in the United States.” The overall goals of the series are to help students explore the similarities and differences among different faith traditions, learn that there is no one “right” belief system, identify the implications of living in a country whose religious freedom has engendered tremendous religious diversity, and consider their own responses to those who believe differently than they do.



Objectives

Students will:

  • Understand freedom of religion.
  • Examine their own actions when someone believes differently than they do.
  • Identify ways that we can be more accepting of different belief system

Essential Questions:

  • What is freedom of religion?
  • In what way does freedom of religion help to promote respect for differences in our country?
  • What challenges come along with freedom of religion? 
  • How do I feel when I see someone practicing a religious tradition that is different from mine or my family’s?

Be Inspired:The ideas included are offered as starting points as you and your students explore, discover and live the lessons. Be sure to elicit and encourage student and parent participation, consistently reinforcing the value being addressed. Allow lessons to authentically develop and change based on engagement and interests.
