My Way Is Not the Only Way

Lesson Summary:

This lesson by Tolerance.org is not designed exclusively for Jewish students, so educators can adapt the lesson to fit their community's needs.

This lesson is the second in a series called “The Rich Tapestry of Religion in the United States.” The overall goals of the series are to help students explore the similarities and differences among different faith traditions, learn that there is no one “right” belief system, identify the implications of living in a country whose religious freedom has engendered tremendous religious diversity, and consider their own responses to those who believe differently than they do.

In this second lesson, students will learn similarities and differences among the major religions in the United States.

Objectives

Students will:

  • Learn about different belief systems.
  • Appreciate the benefits of living in a country with many different religious beliefs.
  • Identify similarities and differences of different belief systems.

Essential Questions:

  • What do religious traditions and beliefs say about people?
  • What can I learn from the religious traditions and beliefs of others?
  • How would our nation be different if there was only one religion?
  • What connections can we make between different religions?
  • What can we learn from the uniqueness of different belief systems?

Be Inspired:The ideas included are offered as starting points as you and your students explore, discover and live the lessons. Be sure to elicit and encourage student and parent participation, consistently reinforcing the value being addressed. Allow lessons to authentically develop and change based on engagement and interests.
