We Were Strangers, Too: Learning about Refugees through Art

Lesson Summary:

From the ADL- Anti Defamation League:

"This lesson provides an opportunity for students to learn more about the current refugee crisis, view and analyze related artwork produced by artists all over the world, and reflect on the refugee crisis through reading, writing, art, social media and other activities to deepen their understanding of the refugee crisis and promote empathy for what it means to be a “stranger.”"

This resource is not designed for specifically Jewish audiences, so educators should adapt the materials as they deem fit for their community. The texts of Exodus 22:21 "And a stranger shalt thou not wrong, neither shalt thou oppress him; for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt." and Deut. 10:19 "Love ye therefore the stranger; for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt." can be enhanced with this resource.

Be Inspired:The ideas included are offered as starting points as you and your students explore, discover and live the lessons. Be sure to elicit and encourage student and parent participation, consistently reinforcing the value being addressed. Allow lessons to authentically develop and change based on engagement and interests.
