Birth
LIFE
In Jewish tradition, the birth of a child not only signifies the welcoming of a new life into the world, but also marks the child’s entering of the covenant with God. Infants are given a Hebrew name, liking them to their Jewish heritage, whether it be because the name is of biblical origin, or that it is in honor of a deceased family member. Jewish boys are circumcised on their eight day of life at a brit milah, a literal representation of one’s entering the covenant. Today, Jewish naming ceremonies for girls also serve similar purposes.
