Shabbat Prayer
Prayers and Blessings
On Shabbat, there are various prayers or blessings that are added to the daily morning and evening liturgy. Not only are their blessings frequently done at home, such as lighting candles, blessing wine, and blessing bread, but there are numerous poems, psalms, and songs that are interspersed throughout the service that are directly connected with observing Shabbat. When asked which day was the holiest within Judaism, the rabbis frequently did not answer with “Yom Kippur,” which often is the assumed answer. They answered Shabbat, as once a week we celebrate the separation between the holy and profane. As such, the additional pieces of liturgy added within the basic service structure uplifts the significance of Shabbat.
