The Brass Serpent
Books
Author: Eric Kimmel
Illustrator: Joanna Miller
The Israelites wandering the desert complain to Moses and refuse to listen to God. God sends a plague of snakes to attack the people. When Moses pleads with God to have mercy, He sends Moses a Brass Snake which Moses lifts on his staff. All those who look at the snake are healed; those who refuse to do so, die. The scales of the snake are used for the Temple doors a thousand years later.
1) This is the only book for children that traces and explains the origin of the symbol used by physicians and hospitals the world over – a staff with a snake curled around it.
2) Reveals an important element of the power of healing: that the snake that destroys can also become the snake that heals, if man wills it.
