Guess Who: Introductory Activity for Lessons on Jews or Judaism


Lesson Summary:

In this introductory activity students guess the identity of famous individuals based on short descriptions. The individual are famous people from a wide variety of fields including Sammy David Jr., Seth Rogan, Steven Spielberg, Joe Lieberman, Jerry Seinfeld, Gene Simmons, Harry Houdini, William Shatner, Sarah Jessica Parker, Paul Simon, and many more. Students will then try to identify what these individuals have in common (they are all Jewish). All instructional procedure and identity cards for the activity can be accessed below.



Aims

1) Challenge pre-existing stereotypes by demonstrating that Jews are a diverse group.

2) Increase the relevance of lessons on Jews and Judaism by highlighting Jews who will be familiar to students.

Be Inspired:The ideas included are offered as starting points as you and your students explore, discover and live the lessons. Be sure to elicit and encourage student and parent participation, consistently reinforcing the value being addressed. Allow lessons to authentically develop and change based on engagement and interests.
