Rosh Hashannah Penny Postcard Project
Projects & Crafts
A resource by the Jewish Historical Society of Greater Washington, this guide provides several different activities inspired by the early 19th century trend of sharing postcard on the Jewish new year.
"Beginning in the late 19th century, Jewish families in America sent “penny postcards” as New
Year’s greetings. The penny postcards provided an inexpensive and expressive way for jews to share
holiday wishes. They were called “penny postcards” because they cost 1¢ to mail...The Jewish community participated in this popular trend, sending postcards with
Rosh Hashanah greetings and images of Jewish homes, families, and sites (such as synagogues). Postcards
were often collected and kept in albums as keepsakes."
