Holocaust Visual History Lesson: Courage


Lesson Summary:

From University of Southern California s Shoah Foundation:
This lesson is a part of Creating Character,  a series of eight multi-media classroom lessons, each of which explores the importance of positive character development. These lessons are geared towards teachers who teach 8th to 12th grade.  

In this lesson, students examine the character trait “courage.” Activities include watching visual history testimony clips, given by a rescuer, a member of the resistance, and a survivor of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. Each addresses a different perspective on courage and are used to prompt class discussions about the nature of courage and fear.



Objectives

  • Students will explore and develop an understanding of the concept of courage. 
  • Students will identify their own attitudes and beliefs about courage. 
  • Students will isolate examples of courage in current events and in their own lives. 
  • Students will evaluate examples of courage in the context in which they occurred. 
  • Students will work with visual history testimony. 
  • Students will use visual history testimony to examine the courageous actions and deeds of others during the Holocaust.

Be sure to elicit and encourage student and parent participation, consistently reinforcing the value being addressed. Allow lessons to authentically develop and change based on engagement and interests.
