Holocaust Visual History Lesson: Respect

Categories Show Respect , Holocaust

Lesson Summary:

From University of Southern California s Shoah Foundation:
This lesson is a part of Creating Character,  a series of eight multi-media classroom lessons, each of which explores the importance of positive character development. These lessons are geared towards teachers who teach 8th to 12th grade.

In this lesson, students work in pairs to examine the ways that they demonstrate respect – and disrespect – to the people and institutions around them. The testimony clips include a liberator emphasizing his position toward religious intolerance, and two Holocaust survivors reflecting upon the humiliation they witnessed and experienced during the war. Students are asked to think about the role that respect has played in the past – specifically, respect for individuals, respect for ideas, and respect for differences. Among the exercises in this lesson are small group work, large group discussions, and creative writing activities.

Objectives

  • Students will develop an understanding of the concept of respect.
  • Students will identify respectful behaviors and the impact of such behaviors.
  • Students will work with visual history testimony.
  • Students will use visual history testimony to identify examples of respect and disrespect by evaluating the actions of others.
  • Students will evaluate their own beliefs regarding respect.

Be Inspired:The ideas included are offered as starting points as you and your students explore, discover and live the lessons. Be sure to elicit and encourage student and parent participation, consistently reinforcing the value being addressed. Allow lessons to authentically develop and change based on engagement and interests.
